Alpine lake in the Sierra Nevada
About the rally

A rally built by riders, for riders.

The Sierra Chapter of the BMW Riders Club started in 1998 with a dozen GS owners camping at Lake Alpine for a long weekend. Nothing was planned. Bikes were swapped, beers were shared, and a tradition was born.

Twenty-eight years later, the Sierra GS Rally is the largest gathering of adventure and touring riders in northern California — but it still has that same campsite energy. We keep it small (180 riders), keep it in the high country, and keep it focused on what brought everyone here in the first place: the ride.

Proceeds support the BMW Riders Club Sierra Chapter and the Bear Valley trail preservation fund.

Common questions

Do I need to own a BMW?

Most riders ride BMW Motorrad bikes, but we welcome any adventure or touring bike that's road-legal and ready for mountain passes.

Is this beginner-friendly?

Yes. We split into pace groups and run a dedicated novice ride each morning. The GS skills clinic is open to all levels.

Can I bring a passenger?

Absolutely. Passenger registration is a small add-on — they get meals, merch eligibility, and a wristband for all events.
